2011 Season 1 Finished

This past Wednesday saw the first season for 2011 come to a close. The Vypers Volleyball Club had three teams competing this season with mixed results.

In the women’s competition, we had entered a junior and a senior team.
This season has seen the roster for the junior squad decrease, with a few players leaving Darwin for University, and a couple more quiting mid-season. However, this has given extra game time for the remaining players to shine. The junior girls finished this season in 6th place.

The Senior Women’s team finished the season in 4th place, qualifying for the finals playoff against competition leader Kankles. The team had the lead in the third set but were unable to finish the set, losing in straight sets to Kankles who went on to claim first place. Due to a quirk in the draw, there was no Bronze medal playoff which by default went to Uni Cougars. We will be taking this issue up with the DVA, as we believe this is unfair.

In the men’s competition, Vypers finished undefeated at the top of the ladder, having only conceded 2 sets this past season. With a finals draw of three teams, Vypers would battle for Gold against the winner of a playoff between Uni Stingers and Palmo’s.
After a close match, Palmo’s defeated Uni, and were set to square off against our Men’s team.
Palmo’s fought hard, and managed to keep it fairly close in the first two sets. With the substitution for the fresh Andrew Scott, the boys fired up and managed to finish very strongly and gaining the first championship for 2011.

This season is the first season that Vypers has taken blub Best and Fairest player votes. The votes will be tallied up and the results announced and the End-of-Season Event being held this Friday!

There will be a season break of about 6 weeks. The DVA, is still confirming venue hire and are looking at a season 2 start around the first week of June.
